Go Here, Do This Now

Electronic Frontier Foundation Action Page

I normally don’t do this sort of thing, but I’m really unhappy about a bill before the senate: S. 2248. Senator Dodd is going to Filibuster this. If you would contact your Senators and ask them to fulfill their oaths to uphold the Constitution, that would be nice. The link above has you fill out a form; IT figures out who your senators are and forwards the message to them. It also has an Uncheck box to tell the E.F.F that you DON’T want to be on their mailing list.

Here’s the bill in question with explanations in English:

This is the so-called FISA bill. This particular version gives blanket immunity to telecoms that knowingly broke the law
In a civil suit against AT&T, AT&T tried to get the case thrown out of court. Here is what (Republican appointed) Federal Judge Vaughn Walker had to say:

I don’t have a lot against telecoms, in fact I worked for one, but giving them blanket immunity is a guarantee that they will never have to testify against the government officials who persuaded them to break the law and that is the main reason V.P. Cheney is pushing this so hard.

There are a lot of good reasons to be against the bill. Glenn Greenwald can explain better than I.

Chris Dodd is going to Filibuster this on Monday. Filling out the form on the link at the top of the page will automatically inform your Senators that you wish for them to support him. (To my California addressees, go ahead and send it to Feinstein, I’ve sent mine to Warner, for God’s sake.)

If you want to give Senator Dodd an encouraging word, you can do it here:

If you wanted to forward this to others that would be ok. Remember the kind of power we are trying to control would be equally disastrous in the hands of Senator Hillary Clinton as it would be in President Tancredo’s.
